Almoines
Village
Almoines is a municipality of La Safor, in Valencia, with a flat municipal area bordered by the Serpis river, which separates it from Real de Gandia. Of Muslim origin, in 1609 it lost almost all of its Morisco population, leaving only five Old Christian families, and it took almost half a century to recover; it belonged to the Duchy of Gandia. Until the 17th century it was an important sugar centre, and in 1848 the Frenchman Henri Lombard Gaujoux set up a silk factory there which, under his sons, came to employ around 500 workers, mostly women, until it closed in the 1990s. Today its irrigated market gardens produce oranges and mandarins, protected by the IGP Cítricos Valencianos, with varieties such as navelina and clemenules harvested between October and January. It has 2,664 inhabitants.
