Palmera
Village
Palmera is one of the smallest municipalities in the Safor comarca, in the province of Valencia, with flat terrain over the huerta of Gandía; it has 1,038 inhabitants (INE 2025). It was depopulated after the expulsion of the Moriscos and belonged to the lordship of the duchy of Gandia until the disentailing laws of the Cortes of Cádiz of 1814; during the 19th century, after the silk crisis and the rise of orange growing, its population doubled to the 458 inhabitants of 1900. Its economy, centred on irrigated citrus, has added an industrial estate and new residential areas since the 1990s. Its main monument is the parish church of the Purísima Concepción, neoclassical in design and declared Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection designation in the Valencian Community), which preserves sections of the original 17th-century construction.
