What to see and do in Bellreguard

Bellreguard
Village
Bellreguard is a municipality of La Safor, on the alluvial plain of the Llacuna, between the Sierra Gallinera and the right bank of the Serpis river, with 5,032 inhabitants (2025) split between the village and the Playa de Bellreguard, a built-up exclave that doubles the population in summer. Of Islamic origin, as shown by the Morisco necropolis found in 1984, it changed its Arabic name, Sotaia, to Bellreguard in 1486, when it was acquired by the Duke of Gandia. It was a Morisco rectory until 1534, when it was raised to a parish, becoming independent from Gandia in 1574. The expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 left its houses empty — of 165 families, four Christian ones remained — and it took 50 years to recover 30% of the population. Its coastal market gardens have, over two decades, replaced a good part of their orange trees with avocado.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Bellreguard
Monument
The first temple of Bellreguart, on the plaza Mayor, was built in 1534 at the request of the Dukes of Gandía as a parish for moriscos, under the patronage of Saint Michael the Archangel; it became an independent parish in 1574. The mosque already existing in the mid-15th century had become a church during the 16th century, keeping its small size, and was enlarged at the end of that century. Destroyed in the Civil War, it was rebuilt between 1943 and 1952 by the architect Joaquín Aracil Aznar, with donations from parishioners, with a nave 20 by 40 metres resting on 54 octagonal columns and ashlar stones at the base -from an old bridge over the Serpis in Gandía- topped with concrete and exposed brick. The bell tower, of irregular octagonal plan and a single stage, reaches 45 metres in height.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Carmen de Bellreguard
Monument
Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen de Bellreguard, in a municipality of Islamic origin that changed its Arabic name, Sotaia, to its current one in 1486, when it was acquired by the Duke of Gandia.
Morisco necropolis of Bellreguard
Nature
Bellreguard, of Islamic origin, preserves a Morisco necropolis found in 1984; the municipality changed its Arabic name from Sotaia to Bellreguard in 1486 when it was acquired by the Duke of Gandía.
Festivities of San Miguel de Bellreguard
Activity
Patronal festival of Bellreguard in honour of Saint Michael, celebrated on 22 and 23 September with the traditional Ball de la Forca, a stick dance performed exclusively by men and the only dance of its kind documented in the comarca of La Safor. The dancers wear a white linen shirt, wide morisco-cut breeches, white socks with coloured garters, black-ribboned espadrilles, a waistcoat and a silk kerchief, and carry three- or five-pronged forks, seven in the case of the dance's director. The festivities also include Moors and Christians re-enactments and the participation of comparsas of drapets or pedacets.
Avocado in the coastal market gardens
Food and drink
The coastal strip of the Safor, almost free of frost, has in two decades replaced part of the orange grove with avocado of the hass and bacon varieties. Harvesting runs from November to May and has made the comarca the main producing area of the Comunitat Valenciana.
