What to see and do in Beniflá

Beniflá
Village
Beniflá is one of the smallest municipalities in the Valencian comarca of the Safor, situated on the right bank of the Serpis river, whose course marks the western boundary of the municipal territory and forms one of the area's characteristic river landscapes. It has 505 inhabitants. It was a former Muslim alquería that kept a Morisco population until the expulsion of 1609, and belonged to the Carroç family and to the duchy of Gandia; after a long depopulation, it recovered in the 18th century thanks to mulberry cultivation. Today its irrigated lands produce oranges and vegetables. It preserves the church of Sant Jaume, of Morisco origin and dating from the 16th century, and the Molí Vell, an old flour mill from the 14th or 15th century. It celebrates its festival on 25 July, for Saint James the Apostle.
Serpis River through Beniflá
Nature
The Serpis river rises in the Polop valley, at the foot of the Carrascal de la Fuente Roja, and runs 74.5 kilometres before flowing into the Mediterranean at Gandia. As it passes through Beniflá, in the La Safor comarca, it follows the line of the municipality's western boundary -entirely flat in relief- leaving the town on its right bank. It is a river of Mediterranean regime, with torrential floods in autumn and an average flow of 2.5 cubic metres per second, regulated upstream by the Beniarrés reservoir.
