What to see and do in Beniarjó

Beniarjó
Village
Beniarjó is a municipality in the comarca of La Safor, in the province of Valencia, situated on the right bank of the Serpis river, near its confluence with the Vernisa, with 1,964 inhabitants. It originated as an Andalusi alquería dependent on Bairén castle, documented in the 12th century, which Jaume I granted in 1247 to Román Castellà and which ended up in the hands of the March family, integrated into the Duchy of Gandia. There, in the 15th century, the poet Ausiàs March was lord, administering lands and irrigation channels for three decades while writing much of the poetry that renewed lyric verse in the Catalan language. The March palace later passed to the House of Medinaceli, which dismantled it; today the village retains the parish church of Saint John the Baptist.
