What to see and do in Guardamar de la Safor

Guardamar de la Safor
Village
Guardamar de la Safor is one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of La Safor, in the province of Valencia, with 622 inhabitants, on the shores of the Mediterranean and with a 500-metre beach. Also known as la Alquerieta, it was an Andalusi alquería that retained population until the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, when it had almost a thousand inhabitants; it was left depopulated afterwards, passing through the hands of the Borja family and the Count of Trénor, until the abolition of the lordships. Its economy is based on irrigated agriculture, with crops of oranges, tomatoes and vegetables. It precariously retains the remains of a square 16th-century tower, part of the coastal defensive system and declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), and a 17th-century parish church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, patron of the village.

Nature
A dune system with preserved Mediterranean vegetation in Guardamar de la Safor, a municipality with a low, sandy coastline on the Mediterranean, in the comarca of La Safor. The only relief in its territory is this strip of sand, which forms a 500-metre beach on land that is otherwise completely flat.
