Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Bellreguard Monument · Bellreguard, La Safor, Valencia The first temple of Bellreguart, on the plaza Mayor, was built in 1534 at the request of the Dukes of Gandía as a parish for moriscos, under the patronage of Saint Michael the Archangel; it became an independent parish in 1574. The mosque already existing in the mid-15th century had become a church during the 16th century, keeping its small size, and was enlarged at the end of that century. Destroyed in the Civil War, it was rebuilt between 1943 and 1952 by the architect Joaquín Aracil Aznar, with donations from parishioners, with a nave 20 by 40 metres resting on 54 octagonal columns and ashlar stones at the base -from an old bridge over the Serpis in Gandía- topped with concrete and exposed brick. The bell tower, of irregular octagonal plan and a single stage, reaches 45 metres in height. Photo: 19Tarrestnom65 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Bellreguard
