What to see and do in Gavarda

Gavarda
Village
Gavarda —Gabarda in its traditional Spanish name— is a municipality of the La Ribera Alta comarca, in the province of Valencia, 51 kilometres from the capital. It was a former Muslim alqueria divided among Christian settlers in 1250 and belonged as a lordship to the Pròxita family during the 14th and 15th centuries, and later to the Mendoza, marquises of Cenete. In 1609 it was depopulated by the expulsion of the Morisco families, and received a settlement charter in 1612. The old town, next to the Xúquer, was flooded by the breach of the Tous dam in 1982, which led to a new settlement being built in the mountainous area of Loma Llarga; it retains an 18th-century battery that controlled the river and the road between Castile and Valencia.

Historical milestone
The breaking of the Tous dam flooded in 1982 the old village, settled beside the Xúquer, and the authorities decided to raise a new settlement on high ground. Much of the population moved, although some families went on living in the old quarter.
