Senyera
Village
Senyera is a municipality in the southern part of La Ribera Alta, in Valencia, at 42 metres above sea level and with barely 2 km² of territory, situated on the right bank of the Albaida River, which has caused it numerous floods. Its origin lies in an Andalusi alquería which, like neighbouring Benamegís, passed to the lordship of the Sanç family of Játiva and formed part of the marquisate of Benamegís, which had 47 residents in 1572. After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 the territory was depopulated; a settlement charter was granted to Senyera in 1611, although Benamegís was never repopulated. Rice cultivation slowed its growth in the 18th century because of the fevers it caused. Its church of Santa Ana, from the 18th century, had its origin in the Morisco rectory of Benamegís.
