What to see and do in Cotes

Cotes
Village
Cotes is one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of La Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, with 314 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated in the western sector of the valley of Cárcer, on the right bank of the Júcar River, which receives the Sellent River within its territory. Its name comes from the Latin cos, cotis, “hard stone”, due to the crust of the glacis terrain on which it stands. It was a Muslim settlement that King James I granted to the abbot of Scala Dei in 1238, and it later belonged to the Castellá, Ortiz, Blanes and Palafox families, marquises of Ariza; an earthquake in 1748 destroyed the church, the manor house and several houses. Its parish church of San Miguel, with seven side chapels, opens its façade onto the village's only square.
