What to see and do in Castelló

Castelló
Village
Villanueva de Castellón, called in Valencian Castelló de la Ribera, is a municipality of La Ribera Alta (Valencia) at the confluence of the Albaida and Júcar rivers, at altitudes between 29 and 261 metres. It has 6,972 inhabitants (2025). Of Muslim origin, it received the title of town from Philip II in 1587; after the War of the Spanish Succession it came to be called Castellón de San Felipe and remained subordinate to Carcaixent until 1735. Its church of the Assumption follows a late 15th-century layout with later alterations, although its bell tower, from the 13th and 14th centuries, predates the church itself. It also preserves the Art Nouveau market of 1928, by Carlos Carbonell, and the Santo Domingo School, from 1901. It celebrates Moors and Christians festivities and, in March, the Fallas.
