What to see and do in Antella

Antella
Village
Antella is a municipality of La Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, next to the Xúquer, with 1,130 inhabitants (INE 2025); its name derives from the Latin anticula, 'sluice gates', after the Séquia Reial, which draws its flow in the term and runs for more than fifty kilometres, irrigating some twenty thousand hectares. Of Muslim origin, its original settlement of Xarquia was abandoned because of flooding by the Júcar and moved to higher ground; the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 left the town almost depopulated and forced it to be resettled with Christians. It retains a Mudéjar tower, the only remnant of the old manor house, and has celebrated the Maerà since 2012, a tradition of floating logs down the Júcar that received ministerial support in 2019 for its candidacy for UNESCO's intangible heritage, declared in 2022 an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Hermitage of el Cristo de la Agonía de Antella
Monument
A hermitage of Baroque origin, with a single nave, barrel vault and two side altars, dedicated to the Cristo de la Agonía and venerated as patron alongside the Virgen de la Cabeza.
Tower of el Palacio de Antella
Monument
A tower that is the only surviving element of the old manor house of Antella (Valencia), built during the period of Arab rule and fitted with large chambers; the palace stood facing the Plaza de la Iglesia, with a 34-metre façade, and had living quarters, its own oil mill, stables and a granary. The tower, with a square floor plan about six metres on each side, is built of brick and masonry, with a ground floor and three upper storeys, a vaulted upper hall and a terrace reached by an internal spiral staircase, topped by a small watchtower. Although it has not been rebuilt, it is preserved in good condition, and has been protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 2001.
La Maerà d'Antella
Curiosity
A traditional festival in Antella which in 2019 received the backing of the Ministry of Culture for its candidacy to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Séquia Reial del Xúquer
Historical milestone
A canal that draws its water from the Xúquer at the assut d'Antella and which, over a course of 54 kilometres, irrigates more than twenty thousand hectares and sustains twenty-one settlements in the comarcas of the Ribera Alta, the Ribera Baixa and l'Horta Sud, discharging into the séquia de Favara; it was the main artery of the Xúquer until the recent construction of the Xúquer-Túria canal. Its construction, begun in the second half of the 13th century under James I, first carried water to the municipal area of Alzira; between 1770 and 1815 it was extended, at the request of the Aragonese nobleman Pedro de Alcántara Fernández de Híjar, Duke of Híjar and Lord of Sollana, as far as the municipality of Albal, which doubled the irrigable area. The name Séquia Reial was adopted in the 18th century; before that it was known as Séquia d'Alberic and Séquia Reial d'Alzira.
