What to see and do in Càrcer

Càrcer
Village
Càrcer is a municipality of the Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, situated downstream from the Tous dam, in the centre of the valley of the same name, irrigated by the rivers Júcar and Sellent. The valley was formerly called the Valley of Broto and of the Flowers; the Arabs also knew it as the Valley of the Flowers, and according to Father Lerchundi the Arabic name Carzre itself would mean 'a place of rest, calm and tranquillity', while Pascual Madoz, in the mid-19th century, called it the Valley of Death after falling ill there with fevers. Its historic aqueduct, l'Arca, suffered severe damage in the flood of October 1982 caused by the breach of the Tous dam, and its 18th-century Baroque church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built after an earlier temple burned down.
