Alcàntera de Xúquer
Village
Alcàntera de Xúquer is a municipality of La Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, on the right bank of the river Xúquer, next to its confluence with the river Sellent, at 33 metres above sea level. Its place name, from the Arabic al qántara, the bridge, points to its Islamic origin; James I incorporated it in 1244 into the newly created Kingdom of Valencia, after the conquest of Xàtiva, although the Muslim population remained, as Mudéjars and later as Moriscos, until their expulsion in 1609, which led the lord Cristóbal Despuig to grant a new settlement charter in 1611. The lordship passed through various lineages until the dissolution of the seigneurial system in the 19th century. Its economy has been agricultural: mulberry and rice gave way to the orange tree, the dominant crop today. It has 1,468 inhabitants.
