What to see and do in Sumacàrcer

Sumacàrcer
Village
Sumacàrcer is a municipality of the Valencian Ribera Alta, at 45 metres above sea level, on the right bank of the river Júcar, in a landscape made rugged by the last terraces of the massif of the muela of the Caroche. Its castle, with ruins from the Caliphal and Christian periods of the 10th to 13th centuries, stands on a hill one kilometre from the town; at its foot are Iberian remains and a Bronze Age settlement. In the first half of the 13th century the castle gave its name to a term that encompassed alquerias such as Sueca, Antella and Cárcer; at the end of that century it was abandoned and the population moved to its present site, next to the Júcar. The lordship later belonged to several families, among them the Crespí de Valldaura, whose members included a vice-chancellor of the Crown of Aragon and two bishops.
Castle of Sumacàrcer
Monument
The castle of Sumacàrcer, also called the castle of Peñarroya, is a fortress of Islamic origin predating the 11th century, situated on a long rocky ridge one kilometre from the village, in the Ribera Alta (Valencia). It was built of rammed earth and masonry over the original settlement, making use of the topography to form two separate enclosures, one to the northwest and one to the southeast. It was abandoned in the 13th century when the population moved next to the river Xúquer, although permission was obtained to rebuild it in the 14th. Today only wall remains and the bases of some towers survive. It has been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 2001, with identifier RI-51-0010688.
