What to see and do in Tous

Tous
Village
Tous is a municipality of the La Ribera Alta comarca, in the province of Valencia, situated next to the reservoir of the same name on the river Júcar, at 64 metres above sea level, on the stretch where the river emerges tightly confined from the Cretaceous massif of the Caroig, forming strong gorges. With 1,354 inhabitants (2025), it is a legally recognised Spanish-speaking-majority municipality. The breach of its dam on 20 October 1982, following rains that exceeded 600 mm in the middle basin of the Júcar, caused the largest flood known in Spain, with a flow of 16,000 cubic metres per second, known as the Pantanada de Tous; the dam was later rebuilt with greater capacity. To the north of the town the underground aqueduct that gives rise to the Júcar-Turia canal emerges at the surface.
Reservoir of Tous
Nature
The Tous reservoir holds the waters of the Júcar River and its tributary the Escalona in the municipalities of Tous and Millares, with a maximum capacity of 379 hm³. The original dam, of only 80 hm³, collapsed on the night of 20 October 1982 when the floodgates could not be opened during an extraordinary flood of the Júcar, causing the largest flood on record in Spain, with a flow of 16,000 m³/s recorded at Alzira: the so-called Pantanada de Tous. The current reservoir, with much greater capacity, was completed in 1996, and its waters supply the Júcar-Turia canal; it also serves for flood prevention and irrigation, and hydroelectric use of it is planned. It allows recreational boating and fishing for pike, carp and barbel.
La Pantanada de Tous
Curiosity
The Tous dam, on the river Xúquer, collapsed at around 19:15 on 20 October 1982 after two days of torrential rain that exceeded 600 millimetres at the head of the basin; the weakness of the rock-fill walls and an electrical fault that prevented the floodgates from opening precipitated the breach. The resulting flood, with a peak of 16,000 cubic metres per second, one of the largest ever recorded in Spain, devastated the comarcas of the Ribera Alta and the Ribera Baixa del Xúquer. In Sumacàrcer, Gabarda and Benegida the water reached eight metres in height, and Gabarda and Benegida had to relocate their urban centres to higher ground; of Benegida only the church was preserved. The dead numbered more than thirty and material damage was very extensive.
