What to see and do in Almussafes

Almussafes
Village
Almussafes is a municipality in La Ribera Baixa, in the province of Valencia, already mentioned in a 12th-century Arabic chronicle as a resting point on the road south. It was originally a Muslim hamlet made up of several alquerías and a tower, and it functioned as a customs town — hence its name, from the Arabic mazaf — collecting transit duties on goods, thanks to its strategic position as a point of departure, stopover and commercial destination. Its current name, first documented in 1281, is the result of successive variations since the conquest by James I in 1238. It preserves the Torre del Racef, of Muslim origin, and has housed since 1976 one of the largest Ford plants in Europe, today the driving force of its economy.

Festivities of San Bartolomé y la Santísima Cruz de Almussafes
Activity
The patronal festivities of Almussafes are held from 13 to 16 July. The 13th is the festival in honour of Sant Bertomeu, patron of Almussafes; the 14th, the festival of the Clavaresas in honour of the Divina Pastora; the 15th, that of the Clavarios in honour of the Divina Aurora; and they conclude on the 16th with the festival of the Santísima Cruz, patroness of the town. The events include religious celebrations together with revetlles, firework displays, musical performances, traditional Valencian dances and cercaviles.
First mention of Almussafes
Historical milestone
An Arabic chronicle of the twelfth century records the first notice of the place, whose name alludes to a resting point half a day's journey along the road. That function as a stop on the route towards the south shaped its development until the arrival of industry.
Toasted rice rossejat
Food and drink
Rice that is fried in oil until browned before the broth is added, so that the grain stays loose and toasted. It is prepared with fish or with eel and is one of the dishes that the houses of the municipality reserve for festival days.
