What to see and do in Benifaió

Benifaió
Village
Benifaió is a municipality of the Ribera Alta comarca, in the province of Valencia, part of the second ring of the Valencian metropolitan area, 22 kilometres from the capital. The name comes from an Arabic alqueria, formed from beni (sons) and Hayyún, the name of a Muslim family; historically it was also called Benifayó de Espioca, after the medieval parish, and Benifayó de Falcó, after the family that held the lordship of the place between 1612 and 1872. It has 12,262 inhabitants. In its term the Roman villa of Font de Mussa was excavated, occupied between the 1st and 4th centuries, where in 1922 an altar dedicated to the god Mithras was found, now in the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia; it also retains Almohad watchtowers from the 12th and 13th centuries.
Almohad towers of Benifaió
Monument
Remains of two Almohad watchtowers that were part of Valencia's defensive belt. The Torre de la Plaza stands in the centre of Benifaió, between the Mayor, del Progreso and del Ángel squares; it dates from the 11th to 13th centuries, served as a watch and defence post and as a refuge for the inhabitants of nearby alquerías, is about eleven metres wide at its base and about 23 metres in total height, and was restored between 1994 and 1996, with its interior fitted out as an archaeological museum. The Torre Mussa, or de la Huerta, stands on the outskirts of the town, dates from the 11th or 12th century, was originally a watchtower and later a dovecote, and is built of stone and lime mortar, with machicolated balconies, on a square plan about ten metres to a side.
Roman villa of Font de Mussa and the altar of Mithras
Nature
In the district a Roman villa occupied between the first and fourth centuries was excavated. In 1922 an altar dedicated to the god Mithras appeared there, an uncommon testimony of this eastern cult in the Peninsula, which today is kept in the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia.
Coca boba
Food and drink
Flat sponge cake of egg, sugar and flour, without chemical raising agent, that is baked in a wood-fired oven and taken above all at Easter. It accompanies the mona and the fritters in the repertoire of home-made sweets of the municipality and of the comarca.
