La Llosa de Ranes
Village
La Llosa de Ranes is a municipality of the Costera comarca, in the Valencian Community, 60 kilometres from the provincial capital, with 3,765 inhabitants and an altitude of 106 metres; it lies at the foot of the sierra de Santa Anna, among the hills that separate the Costera from the Ribera. Its name probably comes from the Roman road toward Saetabis, Roman Xàtiva, referring to the flat stone slabs (llosas) that formed it, while “de Ranes” distinguishes it from other Llosas and refers to the vanished hamlet of Rahana, mentioned in the 13th-century Llibre del Repartiment. It is documented from 1373, when it is recorded as the hamlet of Berenguer Fort; in 1520 the local farmers bought it from a nobleman and it became crown land. The territory, mostly dry farmland, has a Mediterranean climate.
Chapel of Santa Ana de La Llosa de Ranes
Monument
Chapel of La Llosa de Ranes set on high ground, with views over the La Costera region. It stands at the top of the Santa Ana hill, in an enclave belonging to the municipality of Xàtiva but reached by crossing La Llosa de Ranes along the Camino de los Baños de Santa Ana. The current building, in Valencian Gothic style, dates from the 16th century, although there was an earlier 14th-century structure; it was erected by Cardinal Rodrigo de Borja in 1456. It has a rectangular floor plan with buttresses, a semicircular doorway with plain voussoirs and three bays with ribbed vaults separated by transverse arches; the vault keystones bear the Borja coat of arms, the Virgin with Child, Saint Michael, the Xàtiva coat of arms and the arms of Aragon. It is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
