The hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Salut of Xirivella, founded in 1604, marks the spot where tradition places the finding of the patroness's image in a well beneath the crypt. The legend, linked to the time of the Reconquista, tells how six potters found the image after hearing bells underground, and that one of them, who mocked her devotion, went blind and regained his sight upon repenting, giving rise to the invocation of the Salud (Health). Listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection designation), the hermitage is the centre of Xirivella's patronal festivities, whose main day is 8 September, when people come from all over the region.
