What to see and do in Alfafar

Alfafar
Village
Alfafar is a municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Sud, 7 km from the city of Valencia. Its present-day settlement stems from an Andalusi alquería, already documented in the 9th-10th centuries, whose name, Aldamosfar, meant pottery or hollow place; after the conquest by James I in June 1238 it is recorded, as Alfolfar, in the Llibre del Repartiment. In January 1347 King Pedro IV granted its lands to Pere Boïl, who turned them into a lordship on 14 February 1363; the lineage held it until the abolition of the lordships decreed by the Cortes of Cadiz. Its territory, flat and fertile, lies largely within the Albufera Natural Park, and its urban centre, joined with Benetúser and Sedaví, occupies barely 13% of the municipal area. It was the comarca's first parish centre.
Church of Nuestra Señora del Don
Monument
A popular Valencian baroque church located on the Plaza Mayor of Alfafar, listed as an Asset of Local Relevance. It was rebuilt between 1736 and 1747 on an earlier building —about which little is known, though it may have been Gothic or a repurposed mosque—, and opened for worship in 1748. It houses the image of the Virgen del Don, which local legend says was found during the conquest, when King James I, camped on the lands of Alfafar, saw seven stars come down from the sky pointing to its hiding place and exclaimed in admiration, «oh, gran Do». Alfafar was the first parish centre of the Huerta Sur, also holding administrative and fiscal functions over neighbouring towns. The bell tower, with three tiers and a clock, and the dome over the crossing, complete a three-nave building.

Historical milestone
The place appears already in the Llibre del Repartiment after the conquest of 1238 as an Andalusi hamlet. In 1363 it passed into the hands of Pere Boïl and his lineage kept the seigneurial jurisdiction until the abolition of the seigneuries by the Cortes de Cádiz.
