What to see and do in Albal

Albal
Village
Albal is a municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Sud, in the province of Valencia, with 17,365 inhabitants (INE 2025), located 10 kilometres from the capital. Its name comes from the Arabic al-baʿl, "dry-farmed land". The territory, flat and irrigated by the Acequia Real del Júcar and the Acequia de Favara —which ends here—, extends towards the Albufera with a narrow strip of marshland. The origin of the municipality goes back to a medieval farmhouse called Alboayal, which King James I granted in 1238 to Gil de Atrosillo; six years later he sold it to the Chapter of Valencia Cathedral, which retained its lordship. It was precisely the Chapter that was able to found the hermitage of Santa Ana in the 14th century, marking the spot where tradition places the finding of an image of the saint in the trunk of an olive tree.
Festivities of Albal
Activity
Albal's patronal festivities are held in July in honor of Santa Ana, whose main day, the 26th, closes the festive cycle with the solemn procession of the patron saint; tradition traces the origin of this devotion to the finding of an image inside the trunk of an olive tree.
Hermitage of Santa Ana de Albal
Monument
The hermitage of Santa Ana stands on a hill west of Albal, in the area known locally as El Replà, within a park surrounded by pine woods. Its founding by the Chapter of the Cathedral of Valencia may date back to the 14th century, already documented in 1402; tradition places here the finding, in 1289, of the image of the saint in the hollow of an olive tree, from which a shoot still grows behind the church. The current building, from 1894 and in neo-Gothic style, preserves older elements at the rear; its brick façade is topped with a pointed pediment and a bell-gable, and the front atrium has pointed arches. The presbytery holds the image of Santa Ana with the Child Virgin, carved in alabaster in the 14th century; together with San Blas, she is patron saint of Albal.
