What to see and do in Alcàsser

Alcàsser
Village
Alcàsser is a municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Sud, in the province of Valencia, at 15 metres above sea level, with 10,772 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Arabic al-qusayr, “the palace” or “the fortress.” After the conquest of Valencia by James I in 1238, the town was granted to Artal de Forces, who tried unsuccessfully to repopulate it with Christians by means of the Carta Pobla of 1248, so a Muslim population had to be maintained; in 1250 the new lord, Pere Roig de Corella, repopulated it again with Mudejars. In 2021 the remains of a Visigothic necropolis from the 6th-7th centuries were found, linked to the nearby site of the Senda de l'Horteta. The frescoes of Saint Martin of Tours and Saint Louis Bertrand in its parish church, attributed to Vicente López, were added in 1805.
Frescoes of the Parish Church of Alcàsser
Monument
The parish church of Sant Martí d'Alcàsser, on Plaza del Castell, replaces a church that stood next to the old manorial castle and the mosque that, after the conversion of the moriscos in 1526, was adapted as a church. Baron Cristòfol Sanoguera funded the construction of the current building around 1590, which had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1708 and was extended in 1805 with the neoclassical dome and crossing. The presbytery and the vault preserve frescoes of San Martín de Tours and San Luis Beltrán, from 1808, attributed to Vicente López, chamber painter to the courts of Charles IV and Ferdinand VII. The dome, topped with blue and white ceramic tiles, was restored in 2002.
Visigothic necropolis of Alcàsser
Nature
The Visigothic necropolis of Alcàsser, known as the Senda de l'Horteta site, was discovered by chance in 2021 during renovation works at a school in the municipality, in the comarca of L'Horta Sud. The remains, close to those of a Roman villa, correspond to an occupation dated between the last quarter of the 6th century and the first half of the 7th century, and the excavation uncovered ceramic materials and structural evidence of the settlement.
