Suera
Village
Suera is a Valencian municipality in the comarca of La Plana Baixa, on the last foothills of the Sierra de Espadán, with a landscape of pine and cork oak (sureres) woods alternating with dry-farming and irrigated terraces. Its origin lies in several Arab settlements united after the Christian conquest; the valley was granted in 1260 by James I to Pere, son of his wife Teresa Gil, and later passed to the lordship of the dukes of Medinaceli. It was left depopulated after the Morisco expulsion of 1609 until 1611. It preserves the 12th-century Arab castle of Maús, raised on the Suera Alta hill and now in ruins, and two deserted medieval settlements, Castro and Suera Alta, as well as the neoclassical church of the Asunción, with frescoes by Joaquim Oliet, and the hermitage of the Cristo de la Clemencia.
