What to see and do in Villamalur

Villamalur
Village
Villamalur is a municipality in the interior of the Alto Mijares, in the province of Castellón, with its centre set on a hill at 644 metres, in the north-western sector of the Sierra de Espadán natural park; the municipal area, rugged, reaches 1,047 metres at the Alto del Pinar and is mostly covered with pine forests, cork oaks and holm oaks. Its origin is attributed to a Muslim farmstead, attested by the castle of Islamic construction next to the historic centre. Repopulated by Aragonese settlers in the 17th century after the expulsion of the moriscos, it came to have 546 inhabitants in 1900, although since then the population has steadily declined to the current 99. It preserves the church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and lives off cherry, almond and olive trees.
Castle of Villamalur
Monument
Fortification located on the outskirts of the historic centre of Villamalur, a testament to the municipality's Arab past. It is a castle of Muslim construction, possibly built between the 10th and 13th centuries, with an irregular polygonal layout. It preserves large stretches of the wall that surrounded it, several standing towers, a cistern that was originally covered with a vault, and traces of water channels. A good part of the visible remains date from the Christian period, since the castle was thoroughly rebuilt after the conquest.
Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán de Villamalur
Monument
Parish church in the historic centre of Villamalur, a village of Arab origin in the Sierra de Espadán (Castellón), founded by the Dominicans of Ayódar and dedicated to Santo Domingo de Guzmán, patron saint of the town. The 18th-century church, which belongs to the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón, has a single-nave plan with a barrel vault and four bays, with no transept but with side chapels, and a sober exterior distinguished by a slender bell tower. Inside, the town's patroness, the Virgen de los Desamparados, is also venerated; she additionally has a ceramic altarpiece at the fountain of Villamalur. The altarpiece of the church's high altar, for its part, is recent work, since the church lacked this element until 2012, when the Diputación de Castellón funded its construction.
