What to see and do in Chóvar

Chóvar
Village
Chóvar is a municipality in the Alto Palancia, in the province of Castellón, on the foothills of the sierra de Espadán, within the natural park of the same name, at 415 metres above sea level, with 316 inhabitants. Its medieval origin is linked to settlers from the castle of Bejís, a settlement that drew the interest of the ruler of the taifa of Valencia, Zayd Abu Zayd, and whose irregular street layout betrays its Muslim founding. It preserves from that period a 12th-century dam that regulates the floods of the Ajuez ravine, as well as the remains of two towers; on the summit of Mount Rubial an Iberian settlement was also built, of which foundations, pottery and coins remain. Its economy is based on dry farming — carob, almond and oil — and it has its own dictionary, that of the chovero dialect.
Remains of the castle of Chóvar
Monument
The remains of Chóvar castle belong to what is known as the Tower of Chóvar, a fortification of Muslim origin whose history is closely linked to that of the nearby castle of Azuébar. Of the original structure, rectangular in plan and built of irregular stone masonry, only the foundations remain standing, along with the base of what may have been the keep, and a rectangular vaulted cistern attached to it. The ruins, listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) under code 12.07.056-002, are located on the slope of the Sierra de Espadán, in the upper part of the village, next to the Calvario path and the road linking Azuébar with Chóvar.

Nature
The slope of the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park that extends over the municipality of Chóvar, in the Alto Palancia comarca, is characterised by heather, juniper and cork oak vegetation, favoured by easterly winds that bring high humidity and relative coolness. The relief here reaches some of the highest points in the park, with peaks such as Hembrar (859 m), Puntal del Aljibe (948 m) and Bellota peak (959 m), in sharp contrast with the town of Chóvar, at only 415 metres above sea level. Chóvar is one of the municipalities entirely included within the park.
