The revolt of the Sierra de Espadán Historical milestone · Aín, La Plana Baixa, Castellón The Espadán revolt was a Mudejar uprising that broke out in 1526 in response to the order issued by Charles I on 13 September 1525, which forced Valencian Mudejars to convert to Christianity. It was joined mainly by the inhabitants of the Sierra de Espadán, where a large Muslim population had concentrated after the conquest by James I, who respected their lands, their religion and their institutions in exchange for recognition of Christian sovereignty; thus, as early as 1242, the king granted a founding charter to the aljamas of Eslida, Aín, Jinquer, Pelmes and Sueras. Thousands of Mudejars held out on the mountain peaks under the leader Zelim Almanzor until they were defeated in September by royal troops and German landsknechts. 1526 Photo: Jrpuig (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Aín
