What to see and do in Vilanova d'Alcolea

Vilanova d'Alcolea
Village
Municipality in the interior of La Plana Alta, in the province of Castellón, on a knoll surrounded by fields of almond, olive and vine. The first traces of human occupation are Iberian, at the Puig Pedró, although Roman remains predominate: the Vía Augusta crosses the territory from north to south, and in 1992 the remains of the Roman station of Ildum were found there. It preserves a wash-house of Roman tradition and the monumental poplar of l'Assut, linked by a route of about seven kilometres among old irrigation systems that connect with the Vía Augusta on the way to Ildum, and the Fuente Roja ravine also runs through its territory. Reconquered in 1235, it belonged to the castle of Les Coves de Vinromà and then to the Temple and to Montesa, which in 1244 granted it a Carta de Población (settlement charter) under the name Villanueva de Alcolea.
Church of San Bartolomé de Vilanova d'Alcolea
Monument
The parish church of Saint Bartholomew, on the calle de l'Església in Vilanova d'Alcolea (Castellón), is listed as a monument of local interest. It stands on a terraced area known as el Planet, formerly a cemetery, and its entrance is flanked by two palm trees. The interior dates from 1707 and retains a Baroque altarpiece on the high altar by the Capuz brothers, while the façade, in Classicist style, was built around 1740; on its doorway, with a balustraded portico, stands the sculpture of Saint Bartholomew, the town's patron. The 36-metre-high bell tower, of cut stone, houses four bells, the oldest from 1820, the work of Francisco Guillem, and above them the mechanism of a wind-up clock from 1892, now out of service.
Festivities of Vilanova d'Alcolea
Activity
Vilanova d'Alcolea's patronal festivities in honor of San Bartolomé, whose parish church presides over the municipality; its territory preserves a wash house of Roman tradition and the monumental poplar tree of l'Assut, linked by a seven-kilometer route that connects with the Vía Augusta.

Ravine of the Fuente Roja
Nature
The ravine of la Fuente Roja, in the municipal area of Vilanova d'Alcolea (la Plana Alta, Castellón), is a spectacular site crossed by several hiking routes that connect with the springs of la Carrasqueta and la Villa.
