What to see and do in Torreblanca

Torreblanca
Village
Torreblanca is a coastal municipality in the comarca of La Plana Alta, in Castellón, situated next to the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca; its urban centre sits at 31 metres of altitude, while the municipal territory reaches 239 metres at the Turó de les Maleses. The area, visited by Roman ships, formed part of the Miravet enclave, between the Sierra de Irta and Cabo de Oropesa; in 1225 Jaime I of Aragón ceded these castles to the Bishop of Tortosa, and the donation already records the name Torre de Luppricato, forerunner of Torreblanca. The present name is attributed to the Torre del Marqués, a crenellated medieval building that tradition links to Doña Blanca de Cardona. Berber pirates sacked the town in 1396 and again in 1397. Today it has 5,744 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Festivities of Torreblanca
Activity
Torreblanca celebrates its main festival in honour of San Bartolomé, its patron saint, at the end of August, with religious events, a fireball-horned bull and livestock displays; the village of Torrenostra, a fishing settlement, also celebrates the Virgen del Carmen on 16 July.
Church of Torreblanca
Monument
The parish church of Torreblanca, in the comarca of La Plana Alta (Castellón), is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew and was built in the 18th century to a design by Juan Barceló. It has three naves with four bays and side chapels, covered by vaults with a crossing dome clad in blue glazed tiles. It preserves a 17th-century painting by José Orient depicting the 1397 Berber pirate assault, listed as Patrimonio Histórico Valenciano (Valencian regional heritage protection listing), as well as works by Josep Ferrer and Joaquín Oliet decorating its interior.
Hermitages of the Calvary of Torreblanca
Monument
Ensemble made up of the Capilla del Santísimo Cristo del Calvario, with a blue-tiled dome, and a Way of the Cross with ashlar stone stations, built between 1739 and 1741. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on the 28th of September 2007.
Ramsar wetland of the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca
Curiosity
The Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca is a narrow strip of marshes and wetlands formed by quaternary deposits on the Orpesa-Torreblanca plain, between the municipalities of Torreblanca and Cabanes, in the comarca of La Plana Alta, bounded by the Sant Miquel and Xinxilla rivers. Declared a natural site in 1988 and a natural park in 1994, it is included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands, being one of the least altered wetland habitats in the Comunitat Valenciana. It is a former lagoon closed off by a coastal bar of gravel and pebbles with stretches of sandy beach, filled in by alluvial sediments; its sheet of water, permanent in some points and seasonal in others, depends on the water table and local springs.
Passió de Torreblanca
Activity
A theatrical performance of the Passion held in Torreblanca, in the Castellón comarca of La Plana Alta, since 1979, staging the final moments of the life of Jesus and his Resurrection. It began in 1978 on the initiative of a group of young people from the Teatro Torreblanquins collective and premiered on 12 April 1979; since then it has been performed once a year, on Holy Thursday at ten at night, on various open-air natural settings around the municipality. It consists of seventeen scenes lasting approximately two hours, with the dialogue entirely in Valencian. It is declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de la Comunitat Valenciana (official tourist-interest festivity designation) and considered a Bien de Interés Patrimonial (heritage-interest asset listing).
The sack of Torreblanca
Historical milestone
On 24 August 1397, four galleys of Berber pirates from Bejaia, which had earlier passed through the Balearic Islands and the Columbretes, raided Torreblanca and carried off the monstrance with the consecrated hosts and 108 captives. The offence unleashed the so-called Armada Santa: King Martin the Humane and the Avignon pope Benedict XIII, the Aragonese Papa Luna, backed with a crusade bull an expedition that gathered in Ibiza seventy ships and seven thousand five hundred crusaders. The fleet set sail in August 1398 and sacked the North African city of Tedelis, where a thousand inhabitants died and another three hundred were taken prisoner; the king later negotiated the recovery of the monstrance in exchange for the release of part of those captives.
