What to see and do in Benlloc

Benlloc
Village
Benlloc is a municipality of La Plana Alta, in the province of Castellón, with 1143 inhabitants (INE 2025), which clearly distinguishes its modern urban layout, in the form of a grid-pattern extension, from the historic one, with narrow streets and small squares lined with old arch-doored houses, crowned by the fortified church. It arose from the old Islamic hamlets of Tahalfazar and Benifaixó; after the Reconquest the population moved to the present-day centre, which was granted a Carta Puebla (settlement charter) in 1250. Its Church of the Assumption has a Renaissance façade and a twenty-five-metre bell tower reached by a spiral staircase of more than one hundred and fifty steps. Every July it hosts the Feslloc, a music festival known for its care for the landscape and the environment.
Church of la Asunción de Benlloc
Monument
The Church of the Assumption of Benlloc, built between 1614 and 1650, has a single nave with side chapels and a polygonal apse, and an attached sacristy. Its Renaissance façade, with richly worked columns, contrasts with the fortress-like appearance given by a defensive tower at the rear of the building. The presbytery retains a star-ribbed vault of Gothic influence, and one of its bells is considered among the oldest in the Valencian Community. The 25-metre-high bell tower is climbed by a spiral staircase of more than 150 steps.
Feslloc
Activity
A music festival in Valencian, organised since 2007 by the Associació Cultural Feslloc, made up of Escola Valenciana and Benlloc Town Council, held every second weekend of July. Known for its commitment to caring for the landscape and the environment, it is largely financed by the profits from previous editions and has a strong economic impact on a municipality of just over a thousand inhabitants. In 2015 it moved its main stage to the Agustí Sancho football ground to hold around 14,000 attendees, its largest edition, and in 2016 it celebrated its tenth anniversary with Fermin Muguruza headlining. Its programming has been criticised for the stylistic bias of its line-ups.
