What to see and do in Les Coves de Vinromà

Les Coves de Vinromà
Village
Municipality in the comarca of La Plana Alta, in the province of Castellón, populated since prehistoric times, as shown by the paintings of the Valltorta ravine and the Mas d'Abad cave. Its castle, of Muslim origin and today completely razed, is already mentioned in the chronicle of Jaime I in 1233; the king gave it in 1235 to Blasco de Alagón, and after passing through the Order of Calatrava and that of the Temple it reached the Order of Montesa in 1317, whose Encomienda Mayor (chief commandery) the town headed. On the hill overlooking the town stands the old church, Gothic with Renaissance details, built on a 9th-century mosque whose east-west orientation it preserves. In 1421 the Cortes of the Kingdom of Valencia met here, an unusual privilege for a place under the lordship of Montesa. It has 1,888 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
Iglesia Vieja de la Mare de Déu dels Desemparats
Monument
A former Gothic church with Renaissance details built over a 9th-century mosque, with the east-west orientation typical of Islamic practice towards Mecca. It crowns the hill that overlooks the town.
Hermitage of Sant Vicent de Les Coves de Vinromà
Monument
The Hermitage of Sant Vicent, dedicated to San Vicente Ferrer and also to San Miguel, stands at the Pla de Sant Vicent, about 300 metres from Les Coves de Vinromà, on the way to the Mas dels Arcs, before the cemetery. Built in the early 17th century — the doorway bears the inscribed year 1614, perhaps commemorating the saint's passage through these lands — although the Gothic ribbing of the apse suggests it may already have been begun in the late 15th century. It is a single-nave building, divided into three bays by buttresses, with a main chapel, a simple ribbed vault and a chancel with a tierceron vault; the sober façade has a semicircular door and a bell-gable. Until the early 20th century it hosted an annual pilgrimage, today a day for a picnic, and local people still climb up to it during the patronal festivities.
The Valencian Cortes at Les Coves de Vinromà
Historical milestone
The Cortes of the Kingdom of Valencia met in 1421 in this town of the Maestrazgo, an unusual privilege for a seigneurial place of the Order of Montesa and a sign of the weight it then had in the comarca.
The olleta of Les Coves
Food and drink
A stew of pulses, vegetables and pork cooked slowly, the winter dish of this inland town; it is accompanied by the lamb tombet, the savory cocas and meats over embers.
