What to see and do in Sierra Engarcerán

Sierra Engarcerán
Village
Sierra Engarcerán, in Valencian la Serra d'en Galceran, is an inland municipality of La Plana Alta, in the province of Castellón, with 1,039 inhabitants (2025), with farmhouses scattered across the sierra such as Els Ibarsos and Els Rosildos. It has Iberian remains at El Castellàs, with Levantine rock art paintings declared a World Heritage Site. Jaime I of Aragón gave these lands to Pedro Valimanya in 1238; under the name Sierra de Valimanya it appears in the 1374 Carta Pobla, until they were bought by the Galcerán Galcerán family, the origin of the present name. The lordship passed to Nicolás de Casalduch, who granted the settlement charter in 1512; his palace, today the town hall, houses a collection dedicated to Bishop Beltrán. It preserves the church of San Bartolomé, from the 16th century, on a knoll that serves as a viewpoint.
Palace of los Casalduch
Monument
The Palace of the Casalduch, in the centre of Sierra Engarcerán, very close to the parish church, dates from the 14th century and follows the patterns of Valencian civil Gothic. It was built by the baron of Puebla Tornesa on the site's old Muslim settlement, and later passed to the Casalduch family, who in 1512 obtained the municipality's founding charter and gave the town its name. Its sober façade has a semicircular-arched door and, above it, the heraldic coat of arms of the Casalduch, barons of Sierra Engarcerán since the 16th century; inside, three pointed arches with wooden coffered ceilings are preserved, one of them original and dating from the 16th century. Since 2007 it has housed the town hall and the museum collection dedicated to Bishop Beltrán, a native of the town.
Iberian site of El Castellàs
Nature
The remains of an Iberian settlement in the municipal district of Sierra Engarcerán, in an area with nearby Levantine rock paintings declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
Hamlets of Els Ibarsos and Els Rosildos
Curiosity
Besides the main village, the municipality extends into small outlying settlements and farmhouses scattered across the mountains, such as Els Ibarsos and Els Rosildos, evidence of the comarca's traditional dispersed settlement.
Church of San Bartolomé de Sierra Engarcerán
Monument
The church of San Bartolomé Apóstol presides over the urban centre of Sierra Engarcerán (Castellón), on a rise that serves as a natural viewpoint over the Plana Alta. The present church, from the 16th century, replaced an earlier one located on the calle Abadía, which is known to have had, in 1423, a high altar dedicated to San Bartolomé and side altars to Santa María and San Gregorio. Work on the present building, begun by the French master builder Pere Bagués and continued after his death by the stonemason Llatzer de Renyaga, was prolonged by damp problems until 1767, the year in which the first Mass was celebrated. Inside, the sculptor Vicente Candau worked, producing the chancel in 1764. The parish preserves a documentary archive going back to the 16th century.
