What to see and do in Cabanes

Cabanes
Village
Cabanes is a municipality in the comarca of La Plana Alta, in the province of Castellón, with 3475 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated next to the Desert de les Palmes and the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca, a natural park that occupies part of its municipal territory towards the coast. Although it seems to have been founded in Roman times as a mansio on the Vía Augusta under the name Ildum, the present-day town was born in 1243 as one of the villages of the Miravet chartered district; in 1575 the old castles of Albalat and Miravet were annexed to it, whence comes its coat of arms with a three-towered castle. In its territory an Iberian stele and Roman remains were found at the Pla de l'Arc.
Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca
Nature
A protected natural area occupying a narrow strip of wetlands and marshes formed by Quaternary deposits, located in La Plana Alta and shared between the municipalities of Cabanes and Torreblanca, bounded by the Sant Miquel and Xinxilla rivers. Separated from the sea by a bar of gravel and pebbles with some sandy beach areas, it retains a body of water that is permanent in some spots and seasonal in others, fed mainly by the water table. Declared a natural site in 1988 and a natural park in 1994, over an area of 865 hectares, it has great scenic value and is home to numerous species of waterfowl. It is reached via the N-340, at the Ribera de Cabanes turn-off, or via the AP-7 at Oropesa del Mar.
Festivities of Cabanes
Activity
Cabanes celebrates its patronal festivities in honour of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Roch on the first Saturday of August and throughout that week, with bullfighting festivities and revetlles. In honour of its patroness, the Virgin of Buen Suceso, the festivities are held on the first Sunday of May and throughout the week, with pilgrimages, bullfighting festivities and revetlles.
Castle of Miravet
Monument
The castle of Miravet, on a hill beside the road from Cabanes to Oropesa, in the Desierto de las Palmas Natural Park, is an Islamic structure with alterations from the medieval Christian period. It is first mentioned in 1090, when it was conquered by El Cid; after the capture of Valencia, Peter I of Aragon occupied Miravet along with the castle of Sufera in order to collect taxes from the Muslim population. In 1225 Jaime I granted it, while it was still in Muslim hands, to the bishop of Tortosa, who around 1233 began the Christian resettlement of the district, which included the town of Cabanes, populated in 1243. Of irregular plan and with a defensive moat, it preserves the side walls, remains of towers and, in the lower enclosure, traces of dwellings and the ruined church of San Martín y San Bartolomé.
The annexation of Albalat and Miravet to Cabanes
Historical milestone
A solemn act incorporated in 1575 into the territory of Cabanes the old places of Albalat and Miravet, then very depopulated; the town remained under the jurisdiction of the bishopric of Tortosa until the late 19th century.
