What to see and do in La Serratella

La Serratella
Village
Municipality of L'Alt Maestrat, in the province of Castellón, bordering Les Coves de Vinromà, the Serra d'en Galceran and Albocàsser; until 2023 it belonged to the comarca of the Plana Alta. It sits on the rugged terrain of the Serra d'en Galceran, whose highest point is the Tossal de la Toiola, at 939 metres; its vegetation of holm oaks and aromatic plants coexists with a surviving monumental yew tree, along with hollies and maples, typical of a colder, damper climate. It also preserves a medieval oven and an old washing place. At the highest point of the municipality stands the chapel of St John Nepomucene, with the hermit's house, a council hall and pens, up to which the local people climb in procession on Easter Monday. The patronal festival, in honour of St Michael, is held on the first weekend of August.
Festivities of la Serratella
Activity
Sources disagree on the patron saint of La Serratella's festivities: some place them in honor of Sant Miquel, the week following the first Sunday of August, and others in honor of Sant Jeroni and Sant Roc, in the middle of that same month.
Medieval oven and washhouse of La Serratella
Monument
La Serratella's oven retains medieval features, with two arcades integrated into the main hall, and is being restored as ethnological heritage; in the Torrente area, the village's traditional fountain, watering trough and public wash house are also preserved.
Hermitage of l'Adjutori de La Serratella
Monument
Baroque hermitage with a picnic area, one of the municipality's landmarks for both worship and leisure.
Chapel of San Juan Nepomuceno de La Serratella
Monument
The Capilla de San Juan Nepomuceno (Chapel of Saint John Nepomucene) lies about four kilometres north of La Serratella, beside the road to Albocácer, at an altitude of 937 metres, in the area known as Tossal or Mirador de la Talaiola, the highest point in the municipality, from which a wide panorama of the district can be seen, including more distant points such as the Ebro delta and the Columbretes Islands. In addition to the chapel itself, it retains the hermit's house, a council hall, a stable and pens, and it is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (an asset of local heritage significance).
Millennial yew of La Serratella
Nature
Monumental yew that survives alongside hollies and maples as a remnant of vegetation belonging to a colder, wetter climate, reached by a steeply descending path from the village.
Pond of el Bosc of La Serratella
Nature
