What to see and do in Vall d'Alba

Vall d'Alba
Village
Vall d'Alba is a municipality of La Plana Alta, in Castellón, with 3,218 inhabitants, whose urban centre sits on a hillside opening onto the valley of the Pla de l'Arc, between Mediterranean dryland crops and the irrigation of the old sénies (water wheels). Its name comes from the Muslim hamlet of Alba, given by Jaime I to the monastery of Benifasar and returned to the Crown in 1244; it belonged as a hamlet to Vilafamés until it became an independent municipality on 4 July 1925. It has springs valued since ancient times, such as the Pou de Beca and the Pou Ample, and the hermitage of Sant Cristòfol, built in 1996 in imitation of those of the 16th and 17th centuries, at the top of the Sierra de l'Albea; three kilometres away, the chapel of la Barona keeps an 18th-century painting of the Virgin and Child.
Patron Saint Festivities of Vall d'Alba
Activity
Vall d'Alba's patron saints are San Juan Bautista and the Inmaculada Concepción, celebrated in the last week of August with bulls, open-air dances and music contests; it also celebrates San Antonio at the beginning of the year.
Fonts de Pou de Beca i Pou Ample
Nature
Traditional springs in the municipal district of Vall d'Alba, long prized for the quality of their water, next to the Pou de Malvestit recreation area in Montalba.
Hermitage of Sant Cristòfol de Vall d'Alba
Monument
A hermitage built in 1996 in imitation of the hermitages of the 16th and 17th centuries, in dressed stone, standing high on the Sierra de l'Albea overlooking the town.
Hermitage of la Barona
Monument
Chapel of the rural district of la Barona, three kilometres from the village of Vall d'Alba, in the Plana Alta comarca. The hermitage already existed as a chapel in 1688, was expanded over time, and its current structure dates mainly from a 1959 renovation, with further extensions in 1921 and 1976. Inside, an 18th-century painting is preserved showing the Virgin seated with the Child in her arms and angels. It is catalogued as Bien de Relevancia Local (local-level heritage protection designation) by the Generalitat Valenciana. The festivities of la Barona, coinciding with the feast of the Virgen de los Ángeles, are celebrated around 2 August.
