Hermitage of San Marcos de Xert Monument · Xert, El Baix Maestrat, Castellón Hermitage situated five or six kilometres from the town centre of Xert, in the site of la Barcella, where a Muslim settlement existed prior to the Christian conquest, already recorded in 1192. From the old settlement, the defensive tower is preserved, attached to the hermitage itself and sharing its east and south walls with it, a rectangular cistern covered with a barrel vault located to the north, and the porch. The tower, of rectangular plan and rubble masonry with ashlar at the corners, is topped with prismatic battlements; on several ashlar blocks stonemasons' marks can be seen and, on the north-west facade, the inscription "año 18-4". The tower was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 19 January 2012. Photo: Juan Emilio Prades Bel (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Xert
