What to see and do in La Salzadella

La Salzadella
Village
La Salzadella stands on elevated ground, on the western slope of the Atalayas de Alcalá, in the Bajo Maestrazgo of Castellón, among olive, almond and fruit trees and the cherry trees for which it is known. It was a lordship of Blasco de Alagón between 1235 and 1245, the year in which he granted a founding charter to Miquel d'Ascó and Pere d'Olzina; it later passed to the Order of Calatrava, the Crown and, from 1319 until the 19th century, the Order of Montesa. At Les Mesquites remains of a Muslim enclosure have been found, with lead plates engraved with Koranic suras. The municipality preserves minor shrines, among them the hermitage of Santa Bárbara and that of San José, high on a mountain, where the villagers go on pilgrimage on Easter Monday. The economy, agricultural and pastoral, today maintains a notable pig-farming stock.
Hermitage of San José de La Salzadella
Monument
The hermitage of San José stands at 635 metres, at the highest point of the sierra that gives it its name, above La Salzadella (Castellón) and almost on the boundary with Santa Magdalena de Polpis. Documented since the 14th century, it was first dedicated to San Cristóbal until 1670, when it was rededicated to San José, possibly owing to the presence of Franciscans in the area. It suffered severe damage in the civil war, with only the image of the saint being saved, having been hidden in a cave, and it was restored in 1921. It is a simple building, rectangular in plan, with walls of whitewashed rubble masonry and a gabled roof, with a single-bell metal espadaña. Local residents climb up to it in pilgrimage on Easter Monday, a tradition organised since 1738, with a solemn mass, the singing of gozos, a meal, music and dancing.
Hermitage of Santa Bárbara de La Salzadella
Monument
The hermitage of Santa Bárbara stands next to an old thoroughfare, now the road to Tírig, about 600 metres from the centre of La Salzadella, one of several minor sanctuaries in the municipality along with the hermitage of San Vicente Ferrer. It formerly received a pilgrimage from the residents of Tírig, until they built their own hermitage in 1603. The current temple, rebuilt over an earlier one of unknown origin, is documented from the late 17th century: with a rectangular plan of three bays and a barrel vault, it preserves baroque sgraffito painting, a portico with a voussoired door and an espadaña with a pediment. Its paintings were restored in the seventies and the roof of the portico in 1992. The liturgical feast day is 4 December, but it is celebrated with a sung mass on the nearest Sunday.
