What to see and do in Tírig

Tírig
Village
Tírig is a municipality in the comarca of L'Alt Maestrat, in the province of Castellón, at 464 metres of altitude and 11 km from Albocácer, the comarca's chief town. It formed part of the bailiwick of Cuevas de Vinromá; in 1237 Blasco de Alagón granted his lordship to Joan de Brusca, who granted a charter of settlement to Christian families in 1245. It has 417 inhabitants (INE 2025) and its economy is based on dryland farming and livestock raising. It is home to the Museu de la Valltorta, devoted to Levantine rock art: about 7,000 years ago the inhabitants of the nearby ravine made, in caves and rock shelters, cave paintings with scenes of hunting and gathering, such as those of the Cueva de los Caballos, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO; the museum preserves the tools found and organises excursions to the caves.
Museum of la Valltorta
Monument
Museum of rock art located in Tírig (Alt Maestrat, Castellón), created in 1994 by the Generalitat Valenciana to preserve, study and disseminate the archaeological heritage discovered around the Valltorta ravine. Since the creation of the Valltorta-Gasulla Cultural Park in 1998 it has been its headquarters. The building, the work of architects Miguel del Rey Aynat and Íñigo Magro de Orbe, stands in the Pla de l'Om area, 500 metres from the ravine, and has a laboratory, storerooms and a library, as well as four permanent exhibition rooms and one for temporary exhibitions.
Festivities of Tírig
Activity
The fiestas of Tírig, in the comarca of L'Alt Maestrat (Castellón), are held every May in honour of Santa Quitèria, patron saint of the town. The main day includes a mass in her honour, after which the coquetes, sweet cakes dedicated to the saint, are handed out among the townspeople, followed by a procession and a popular dance.
Parish Church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar of Tírig
Monument
17th-century church located on the village square of Tírig, built on the same site as an earlier, smaller church of which only the lower part of the present bell tower survives. Its patron, Saint James, is the same as that of the previous church, as recorded in the 1769 pastoral visitation. The tower bears a sundial with the signs of the zodiac and was restored in 2002, taking advantage of the transfer to Germany of two of its three bells, Quiteria and Pilar, for repair; the third, Europa, occupies the highest position. Inside, 18th-century wall paintings are preserved, and the old church once held the tombs of local families such as the Alcàsser, the Rodes and the Tosques.
Hermitage of Santa Bárbara de Tírig
Monument
Chapel located on the outskirts of Tírig, about four kilometres away, in the Can Redo area, on a rocky platform atop a hill offering wide views over the village and the Alt Maestrat. According to legend, it was built by a resident of Tírig grateful for surviving unharmed a lightning strike that destroyed his house; work began in 1603 under the direction of the French stonemason Joan Gogia. It is a simple, austere building, rectangular in plan at 17 by 5 metres with a single nave, whitewashed rubble-stone walls, a pitched roof outside and a barrel vault inside. It is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (an asset of local heritage significance). Its feast day is celebrated on 4 December with a pilgrimage from the village, mass, and the distribution of the traditional "panets" (bread rolls).
Pou de la Vila y Pou de la Cadena de Tírig
Curiosity
Two old wells in the municipality, evidence of Tírig's traditional water supply system before the arrival of running water.
The settlement charter of Tírig
Historical milestone
Blasco de Alagón had donated the place to Joan de Brusca in 1237, and on this date a settlement charter was granted to several Christian families with their fiscal dues; in 1319 the district passed to the Order of Montesa.
The discovery of the paintings of the Valltorta ravine
Historical milestone
A shepherd from the village came upon the figures painted in red in the shelters of the ravine; the find, made known that same year, revealed one of the most important ensembles of Levantine rock art, declared World Heritage in 1998.
Little coques of Santa Quitèria
Food and drink
Sweet cakes distributed at the May festivities dedicated to the patron saint; the local baking also includes the coc en mel, and in everyday cooking oven-baked rabbit in a tray and the olla with chickpeas and cardoons.
