What to see and do in Godall

Godall
Village
Godall is a municipality in the Montsià county, in the province of Tarragona, with 591 inhabitants, situated at 168 metres above sea level in a hollow crossed by the Caldera ravine. Its roots go back to Saracen rule, and after the Christian conquest, in the mid-12th century, the urban core grew up next to the church and expanded with nearby farmsteads. It preserves remains of an 11th-century castle and the parish church, dedicated to San Salvador, in late Gothic style. Its economy revolves around the olive, with an agricultural cooperative, as well as almonds and vines; pigs, sheep and poultry are also raised. Carnival has a special tradition in the town, with dances and a flour fight.
Church of Godall
Monument
The church of Godall is dedicated to Sant Salvador. The village appears documented as Godai from the 12th century, and in 1238 the neighbouring settlement of Vallmesquida received a settlement charter.
Godall Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major (patron saint festival) of Godall, dedicated to Sant Salvador, is celebrated in August, in a village documented as Godai since the 12th century. The place name, of uncertain origin, also appears in old documents as Quodar, Godayr, Godayl, Goday or Gudal, and theories about its origin point both to a Germanic personal name and to an Arabic origin.
Mountain range of Montsià (paratge)
Nature
The Montsià mountain range is a mountainous massif parallel to the Mediterranean coast, in the south of the Terres de l'Ebre, whose northern slope extends, among other municipalities, through Godall and Alcanar. It runs for about 12 kilometres between the river Ebro and the Sénia, with a rugged relief of cliffs, ridges and ravines formed some 25 million years ago during the Alpine orogeny; its highest point is the Torreta del Montsià, at 764 metres, although from Ulldecona the Mola appears taller. North of the Torreta rises the Foradada, a natural viewpoint over the Ebro delta. Owing to the singularity of its limestone relief and because it marks the southern limit of extra-Mediterranean species, the range has been included since 2000 in Catalonia's Plan of Areas of Natural Interest.
