Arab cistern and Castle of Castellnovo Monument · Castellnovo, El Alto Palancia, Castellón Image of Castellnovo, not of the place itself. Arab cistern and castle of Castellnovo, next to the hermitages of Saint Christopher and Saint Anthony of Padua. The cistern, from the Muslim period, has an underground chamber reached by a large stairway and a circular tank with a capacity of 200,000 litres, and is preserved in very good condition. The castle, of Roman origin and rebuilt by the Muslims as part of Segorbe's defensive network, was conquered by James I in 1233 and later belonged to Berenguer d'Entença and, from the 14th century, to Guillem d'Esplugues. In the mid-15th century it was refurbished with a Renaissance stamp, with arched rooms and ribbed vaults; today it survives in ruins, with notable remains still standing.
