What to see and do in Cortes de Arenoso

Cortes de Arenoso
Village
Cortes de Arenoso is a mountain municipality in the Alto Mijares, in Castellón, with 308 inhabitants, between 980 and 1,704 metres, with some of the most important formations of pines and Pyrenean oaks in the Comunidad Valenciana. It belonged to the Baronía de Arenós; on 28 January 1243 Abú Zayd handed it over to Blasco and Ximén Pérez de Tarazona, lieutenants of James I, and eight years later it received a founding charter for fifty Christian settlers. Its hamlet of San Vicente de Piedrahíta, founded by the Arabs and named after San Vicente Ferrer, preserves an archaeological site with two millennia of occupation. Its church, of Our Lady of the Angels, is Baroque and dates from 1585. On festive tables the truffled chicken stands out, stuffed with black truffle from the holm-oak groves of the municipality.

Between 1795 and 1796 the altarpieces of San Vicente, San Miguel and the Virgen del Remedio were made, the work of Christobal Maurat, along with those of San Antonio and San Leandro.
