Pina de Montalgrao
Village
Pina de Montalgrao is a mountain municipality in the Alto Palancia comarca, in the province of Castellón, located at 1,045 metres above sea level in the sierra de Espina, which within the municipality reaches the 1,405 metres of the Alto de Pina; it has 121 inhabitants and is Spanish-speaking. Although Iberian and Muslim remains have been found, the town was founded in 1363 by Juan Alonso de Jérica, lord of nearby Jérica, although it already had a founding charter before that; in 1431 it was sold together with Jérica and Barracas, and in the 18th century it belonged to the Duke of Berwick. Its parish church, from the 15th century, preserves a walled and battlemented precinct, and the Torre del Prospinal is an Iberian tower from the 3rd century BC. The land is covered with pines and shrubs, among them the laurel-leaved rockrose.
