What to see and do in Toga

Toga
Village
One of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of El Alto Mijares, in the province of Castellón, located in a meander of the río Mijares, in the valley where the Sierra de Espadán ends next to the Peñagolosa massif. Its municipal area, with 754 hectares of pine and holm-oak woodland against only 127 of cropland, enjoys a mild climate owing to the proximity of the Mediterranean. On this site there was once a Muslim farmstead; after the conversion to Christianity of the last Almohad governor of Valencia, Zayd Abu Zayd, the place was handed over in 1247 to the archbishop of Tarragona. It preserves the remains of a medieval castle of Arab origin on the riverbank, gates and arches of its former walled enclosure, and 19th-century tiles with religious scenes on several façades. It has 106 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
Ruins of the Castle of Toga
Monument
The castle stands in the lower part of the town, next to the bed of the river Mijares, and its location reflects the strategic importance of the site, situated downstream from the narrow gorge of Toga, an imposing defile of the river. Of irregular plan, it went over time from being a military structure to becoming a seigneurial castle-palace. Today it survives in a rather precarious state, although some stretches of its outer defensive structure can still be admired.
Walls of Toga
Monument
Of the walled enclosure of Toga (Alto Mijares, Castellón), built in the Muslim period around an increasingly fortified Arab farmstead, only its access gateways into the settlement remain standing: that of San Antonio and the Portalet. The San Antonio gateway, to the south of the town, links the calle de Aragón with the urban centre through a passage between two semicircular arches; above it a chapel dedicated to San Antonio Abad is preserved, probably built where a defensive tower once stood, and it is constructed of rubble masonry, ashlar and brick. After the conquest by Jaime I the town became a barony and lost its strategic importance, although in the 19th century it was again the scene of the Carlist Wars. It is generically catalogued as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Ruins of the Hermitage of San Juan of Toga
Monument
The remains of a 17th-century hermitage, also called the hermitage of Santa Bárbara, in the area of La Alameda in Toga.
Hermitage of San Roque de Toga
Monument
A hermitage in the municipal district of Toga, on a meander of the River Mijares between the Sierra de Espadán and the Penyagolosa massif.
Ceramic altarpieces of Toga
Curiosity
A group of 19th-century tile panels decorating the façades of several streets in Toga with religious scenes.
