What to see and do in Planes

Planes
Village
Planes is a municipality of 697 inhabitants in the comarca of the Condado de Cocentaina, province of Alicante, which also includes the settlements of Benialfaquí, Catamarruch and Margarida. The village sits at the foot of a Muslim castle with thick 12th- and 13th-century walls, under the rule of the chieftain Al-Azraq until 1245, when it passed into the hands of James I through a pact of vassalage; it later belonged to the lordship of Cocentaina and, from 1476, to the barons of Planes of the Olcina family. Its urban layout preserves steep streets and stepped stairways. Planes preserves the Aqüeducte dels Arcs, built in the 16th century to carry water from the Catamarruc spring to the valley's orchards by means of a double arcade of ashlar masonry that can still be walked today.
Festivities of Planes
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Planes are held in early October, with a pilgrimage that each year gathers close to 500 people in honour of Saint Roch, to whom the Saturday of the main festival is dedicated: in the morning a wake-up parade with both companies takes place, and in the afternoon, the entry of the Moors and Christians. Sunday, dedicated to the Santísimo Cristo de Planes, the town's main patron, includes a morning wake-up call, a procession to the hermitage and a final string of firecrackers and fireworks.
Hermitage of el Santíssim Crist de Planes
Monument
A hermitage on a small hill north of Planes, reached by a zigzagging Way of the Cross, which tradition traces back to the 15th century, when it was dedicated to San Cristóbal and Santa Bárbara.
Church of Santa María de la Asunción de Planes
Monument
The church of Santa María de la Asunción in Planes, in the Alicante comarca of El Comtat, is the parish temple of the municipality, built on an old mosque that was never demolished and which is believed to have been used as the church's crypt, an uncommon case of coexistence between the Muslim and Christian construction phases under a single building. Rectangular in plan with three naves and a sacristy, it is covered by a ribbed Gothic vault. The temple has been recently restored.
Aqueduct of els Arcs
Historical milestone
Raised in the sixteenth century to carry the water of the Catamarruc spring to the market gardens of the valley, it crosses the ravine with a double arcade of ashlar. It remains the most visible element of the historic hydraulic system of the area and can be walked.
