Benillup
Village
Benillup is a municipality in the province of Alicante, in the comarca of El Comtat, of Muslim origin, as shown by its Arabic name, banī Lubb, 'sons of the wolf' or 'sons of Lope'. It occupies a territory of 3.6 km² in the Travadell valley, which reaches 982 metres in the Sierra de Almudaina. Conquered by the Christians in the mid-13th century, it remained a Morisco settlement until their expulsion in 1609, when it went from about 160 inhabitants to being practically depopulated; by 1646 it had barely 50. Today it has 110 inhabitants, one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca, living mainly from agriculture, with olives, almonds and cherries marketed by the Sant Llorenç Cooperative. It preserves the church of the Virgen del Rosario, from the 16th century.
