What to see and do in Alcosser

Alcosser
Village
Alcosser, officially Alcocer de Planes, is a municipality in the comarca of El Comtat, in Alicante, situated in the former Baronía de Planes, between the Serpis river and the Sierra de Benicadell, near the Planes reservoir. It has 263 inhabitants (INE 2025). Of Muslim origin - its name comes from the Arabic al-qasayr, 'small fortress' - it was conquered in the mid-13th century by James I of Aragon and incorporated into the Kingdom of Valencia; it remained a Morisco settlement, with sixty houses, until their expulsion in 1609. It preserves the parish church of San José, in Renaissance style with a three-tiered bell tower, and the ruined remains of its castle. Its patronal festivities, in honour of Saint Giles, the saints Abdon and Sennen and the Christ of Mercy, are held on the first Sunday of September.
