What to see and do in Beniarrés

Beniarrés
Village
Beniarrés is a municipality in El Comtat, in Alicante, in the valley of Perpuchente, crossed by the Serpis river, with 1,117 inhabitants (INE 2025). The Beniarrés dam on this river was completed in 1958 to attenuate floods and irrigate the orchards of the Safor; its reservoir flooded terraces and mills at the bottom of the valley. Of Muslim origin, it was conquered by James I in 1253 and was inhabited by Moriscos until their expulsion in 1609; it depended on the castle of Perpuchent and later passed through several Christian lords and the Order of Montesa. The municipal area also preserves the Cova d'Or, an important Neolithic site from the 5th millennium BC, where worked-bone spoons, personal ornaments, polished-stone tools and pottery of singular beauty have been found.
Reservoir of Beniarrés
Nature
The Beniarrés reservoir, between the municipalities of Beniarrés and Planes —where most of its water surface lies—, was built in 1958 on the Serpis river: it has a 53-metre-high gravity dam, a gated spillway with a capacity of 1,000 cubic metres per second, 268 hectares of surface area and a maximum capacity of 30 cubic hectometres. It belongs to the Júcar River Basin Authority and its waters irrigate the orchards of the Safor. Fishing for carp and black bass is allowed, as is boating.
Festivities of Beniarrés
Activity
Beniarrés's patronal festival is held from 15 to 18 August in honour of the Mare de Déu de la Cova Santa, San Roque — on the 16th — and the Santíssim Crist de l'Empar, with processions, Moors and Christians parades and a preceding cultural week.
White hermitage of Beniarrés
Monument
A hermitage that crowns the municipality of Beniarrés, one of the most characteristic features of its landscape. It is the hermitage of the Holy Christ of the Afflicted, reached after climbing the village's calvary.
Cave of Or
Nature
The Cova de l'Or is an archaeological site located on the south-western slope of the Sierra del Benicadell, above the valley of the River Serpis, at 650 metres of altitude, within the municipal district of Beniarrés (El Comtat, Alicante). It corresponds to a Neolithic settlement from the sixth millennium BCE, around 5600 BC, formed by an elongated chamber 24 metres deep by 8 metres wide. Discovered by Rafael Pardo Ballester during the surveys of 1933 and 1936, it was systematically excavated from the 1950s onward under Vicent Pascual Pérez, and later, between 1975 and 1985, with Bernat Martí Oliver. Plant and animal remains, ceramic, flint and bone tools, charred wheat and barley grains, and notable pottery decorated with cardial impressions have been found there.
Ravine of l'Encantada
Nature
Natural spot in the municipal district of Beniarrés, one of the places of greatest scenic value in the comarca of El Comtat.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Beniarrés
Monument
Parish church of Beniarrés built in the 20th century on an earlier construction of Gothic origin. The Valencian painter Ramón Garrido Méndez carried out works for this temple, as he also did for the churches of Benisa and Onteniente.
Hermitage of el Sant Crist dels Afligits de Beniarrés
Monument
A hermitage reached by climbing the calvary of Beniarrés, one of the municipality's religious and scenic landmarks.
The construction of the dam on the Serpis
Historical milestone
The dam on the Serpis was completed in 1958 to check floods and irrigate the fields of the Safor. Its backwater flooded terraces and mills at the bottom of the valley and forced the rerouting of tracks and paths that linked the riverside villages.
