What to see and do in Balones

Balones
Village
Balones is one of the smallest municipalities in El Comtat, in the province of Alicante, with 132 inhabitants, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Almudaina and in the valley of the Seta river. Its valleys of Seta and Travadell, almost entirely Morisco, were emptied by the expulsion of 1609 - the place had as many as 49 Morisco households in 1602 - and were resettled after 1611, under the lordship of the Marquis of Guadalest, with settlers from neighbouring comarcas by means of settlement charters. Its name may derive from a farmstead called Belinas, granted by James I in 1250, according to the philologist Joan Coromines. On a rocky spur south of the sierra it preserves the two, badly deteriorated, towers of the castle of Costurera.

Historical milestone
The villages of the valls of Seta and Travadell were almost entirely Morisco and were left empty by the expulsion of 1609. The lords shared out houses and terraces among colonists from neighbouring comarcas by means of cartas pueblas, and several places were never inhabited again.
