What to see and do in Benilloba

Benilloba
Village
Benilloba is a municipality of El Comtat, in the province of Alicante, situated on the right bank of the Frainos river, on the foothills of the Sierra de Aitana. Its name comes from the Arabic banī lūba, 'sons of the she-wolf', which tradition links to Muhammad ibn Mardanis, the Wolf King, although others relate it to Iberian words that would mean the hill of the lowland. A settlement of Muslim origin, after the Reconquest it belonged to Penáguila with the status of a hamlet, and is documented in 1258, in a land exchange between James I and the nobleman Eximeno Pérez de Orís. Its parish church, dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady, was built over a former mosque. The Tossal d'Espinós stands out, with views over the municipality. It has 744 inhabitants.
Church of la Natividad de Nuestra Señora de Benilloba
Monument
The church of the Natividad de Nuestra Señora of Benilloba stands on the site of a former mosque, blessed and converted into a church in 1530; in 1535 Benilloba was established as an independent parish. The present temple, from the 17th century and in neoclassical style, has a Latin-cross plan with a nave of three bays and side chapels, a false dome over the transept and a deep sanctuary covered by a barrel vault decorated with frescoes. It was restored between 1993 and 1995 by Art History students from the University of Valencia.
Cod borreta
Food and drink
Light stew of desalted salt cod with potato, chard or spinach, garlic, paprika and oil, bound at the end with beaten egg. It was a fast-day and Lenten dish in the towns of the valley and remains everyday food on cold days.
