What to see and do in Benifallim

Benifallim
Village
Benifallim, of Muslim origin, is the smallest municipality in the Alcoià, with 130 inhabitants (2025), at 734 metres above sea level, at the foot of the sierra del Rontonar, between the sierras of Castell and Marrà, in the sierra de Aitana. It was occupied by James I in the mid-13th century; its church became independent from Benilloba in 1535, and in 1572 it was a Morisco place, with 42 families, of the lordship of the Castelló family and later of the count of Rótova. The 1609 expulsion of the Moriscos deeply affected the population, and its rain-fed farming economy has encouraged emigration. The old Palacio del Montortal now houses the town hall. Its patronal festivals run from 29 September, for Saint Michael the Archangel, together with the festival “dels casats”, on 8 May, and “dels Fadrins”, in September.

Morisco origin of Benifallim
Curiosity
Benifallim, of Muslim origin, was occupied by James I of Aragon in the mid-twelfth century. It belonged to the lordship of the Castelló family and, later, to that of the Count of Rótova. Its church became independent of the neighbouring parish in 1535. In 1572 it had 42 Morisco families, some 190 inhabitants, until the expulsion of 1609 struck the population hard, a demographic disaster from which the municipality never fully recovered: today it has barely 130 inhabitants.
Festival of els Casats de Benifallim
Activity
Traditional celebration in Benifallim for the municipality's newly married couples.
Festival of els Fadrins de Benifallim
Activity
Fiesta dels Fadrins, a traditional celebration of Benifallim's young unmarried men, a village of Morisco origin expelled in 1609, located at 734 meters among the Sierras of Rontonar, del Castell and de Marrà.
